DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)---The number of bedrooms a tenant may occupy in Duluth, may soon be limited to four in new rental properties.

The Duluth City Council will discuss rental code changes at its meeting Monday night.

The bedroom limitation applies to new multi-tenant licenses for a one or two family dwelling.

The limitation is meant to help control neighborhood density.

It also eliminates the ability to add bedrooms on record between the original licensure and license renewals.

Under the council's current proposal, properties already holding licenses will be grandfathered in.

Properties larger than 3,000 square feet could have up to six bedrooms.

"This is not going to have an impact of any substantial degree on our inspectors out in the field doing inspections," Bryan Bushey, Deputy Chief of the Duluth Fire Department said. "It's just the administrative issues and those people have to support those inspectors and how much time their going to be spending fielding calls and complaints and concerns."

Duluth City Councilor Jay Fosle has proposed that the limitation only apply to college area neighborhoods, not the whole city.

The council is expected to vote on the rental code changes on June 25th.
