A proposed ordinance to allow pawn shops to pawn and purchase items in Duluth on Sundays is up for debate.

City Councilor Gary Krause introduced the proposal on behalf of Pawn America.

Duluth is the only community in 23 that Pawn America serves where they cannot do pawn sales on Sundays.

The public had a chance to weigh in on the subject tonight at the city council agenda meeting.

One pawn shop owner spoke out against the ordinance change.

"We're working six days a week now, changing the ordinance so that we are open on Sunday now...that's seven days a week. It raises our cost of operation which is somewhat marginal now," said David Gilberg who owns Lincoln Park Park.

While the ordinance would not "require" pawn shops to be open on Sundays; those who oppose the measure say it would force them to open their doors to stay competitive.
