Duluth, MN (NNCNOW) -- A Minneapolis based engineering and environmental consulting firm with offices in Duluth, may soon setup shop in Canal Park.

BARR Engineering is in the process of securing two floors in the Waterfront Plaza.

The Duluth Economic Development Authority approved a measure on Wednesday that would allow the company's employees to park in the Irving lot and the steam plant lot in Canal Park.

"We have two lots that are underutilized, the steam plant lot and the Irvin lot and we are now going to be working with interstate parking to manage those lots with BARR engineering being the major tenant during the daytime hours," said Chris Eng, Director of Business and Economic Development.

If you have ever been down in Canal Park you may find that parking can be a challenge; which is why the city says it's trying to fix it.

"The Mayor's waterfront planning visioning that's underway right now does have the addition of about 270 additional parking spaces. We are in the early stages of that plan and are looking at opportunities to expand parking in Canal Park in general," said Eng.

However, expanded parking may have to come sooner as BARR engineering moves ahead with plans to relocate its offices.

"We understand that they are very close to signing a lease, a 10 year lease with a building owner down in Canal Park and we think that will start in March of 2014," said Eng.

Officials say they are still waiting on the final signatures to go ahead with the move.

At this point officials say BARR employees would be able to park in those lots from 6am to 6pm Monday through Friday with others being able to park there after those hours. However, those details are still being worked out.

The company currently has offices in Duluth on West Superior Street.
