Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- Duluth's historic Viking Ship was celebrated 85 years tonight. And it'll also soon celebrate a new home.
Normal ware and tear and vandalism has taken a toll on the ship which currently calls Leif Erickson park home.
The ship has been restored as part of the Leif Erickson Viking Ship Restoration Project.
Money raised during tonight's event will help with repairs and with the construction of putting a roof over the ship's head.
"Every couple years we try to do a big event to raise some money so we can finish off the roof structure, maintain the ship, and display it properly," said Neil Atkins.
Organizers still aren't sure where the ship's final destination will be.
There has been talk about relocating the ship to the Lafarge site west of Bayfront Park... once new development begins there.
The Viking Ship could also stay put in Leif Erickson Park but with a new building around it. Details are expected to be finalized this fall.
