Finland, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- Crews battled a hot and stubborn structure fire for over 7 hours that destroyed the Zion Lutheran Church in Finland, Minnesota.

Crews responded to reports of a fire around 9 p.m., Saturday. According to Finland Fire Chief Peter Walsh, the fire escaped into the ceiling of the church, spreading and escalating during the firefight.

Responders from Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Tofte, Schroeder, and the Lake County Rescue Squad and Sheriff's Department all helped extinguish the fire. The wreckage was still smoldering at noon on Sunday.

According to Walsh, people living near the church saw a lightning strike near the church and saw flames immediately after coming from the kitchen of the church.

No firefighters were hurt. Church services were held at the Finland Community Center Sunday morning.
