Upson, WI (NNCNOW.com) --More action is being taken to educate people about the effects an iron ore mine would have on Northwest Wisconsin.

The first Penokee Hills Education Summit at Whitecap Resort kicked off on Friday in Upson, Wis.

The Lac Courte Oreille band Harvest Camp says they wanted to give the community an opportunity to learn more about the affects a mine would have on the Bad River Water Shed, Lake Superior, and the Penokee Hills located near Mellen Wisconsin.

The event features food, music, tours of the hills, and panel discussions.

"We want to have a lot of conversation with people. So people can be able to ask questions about legislative and environmental history, treaty rights, protecting the water and also the economy," said Barbra With one of the organizers for the summit.

There will be a Potluck Harvest Feast and Pow Wow open to the public on Saturday.
