(Northland's NewsCenter) --- A former Essentia Health System nurse practitioner is accused of illegally prescribing thousands of pain pills to people who were not her patients.

According to our partners at the Duluth News Tribune, Jill Renee Karkoska, a 26-year-old Aurora woman fraudulently prescribed more than 11,000 pain pills to nine people last year.

She is charged with first degree sale of controlled substances and three counts of possessing a controlled substance by fraud or deceit.

Karkoska's finace also faces charges of aiding and abetting the sale of a controlled substance.

Karkoska and her finace are scheduled to appear in court in August.
