Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)
-- President Bill Clinton will be rallying voters in Duluth Tuesday.

The Democratic heavy weight will be at the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the middle of a swing through key battle ground states.

Political experts say the timing isn't a coincidence either. Recent polling is showing Minnesota could be one of those states in play for either President Barack Obama, or Governor Mitt Romney.

In recent weeks, the Governor is gaining ground on the President in Minnesota.

The Star Tribune is tracking this race.

Last month, Obama held an eight point lead over Governor Romney.

Now, the most recent Star Tribune Polls shows that lead is down to three points with a margin of error of plus or minus three points.

Some political experts are saying that's why President Clinton will be in the Gopher State tomorrow.

In the presidential race, the Minnesota electorate hasn't nominated a Republican since 1972 when Richard Nixon defeated the George McGovern.

Professor of Political Science at UMD Tony Hill says that if Obama can't carry Minnesota, the chances of him winning are slim.

He says bringing Clinton to Minnesota could be an act of desperation, fighting for a state that's typically not a battleground for the Democrats.

He also says that Clinton could be used to rally the blue base, and his stop in Duluth could have been a back up plan put in place because of Hurricane Sandy.

"Part of it is out of necessity. The competitive states on the East Coast are getting inundated with a hurricane with Hurricane Sandy, so out of necessity they have to go inland where they are able to put their events on," said Hill at his UMD office.

Clinton will also be stopping in neighboring Wisconsin and Iowa.

The doors to the Kirby Ballroom, at UMD's Kirby Student Center will open at 12:30. The event is free.

The event will be sponsored by UMD's college democrats.
