Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com)-- The only homeless shelter in Douglas County that helps single women and families kicked off their annual 5K this morning.

Harbor House Crisis Shelters hosted the race called "Every Step Brings Us Closer to Home" for runners of all ages.

Last year over 100 people participated in their first 5K. With help from both sponsors and participants, the shelter was able to raise $3,000 in 2012.

Organizers say the money goes a long way.

"It's exiting to see that they want to support the shelter and their service and to get out and enjoy nature and see a little bit of superior."

Since opening in 2001, Harbor House Crisis Shelters has provided shelter and services for over 3,000 people.
