Duluth, Minn (NNCNOW.com) -- Duluth Mayor Don Ness took a moment to read books to kids tonight at the Duluth Public Library.

It was all part of "I love to read" month put on by the United Way.

Every Thursday in February the library will host "cozy pajama story time."

The Mayor's audience dressed the part wearing their pajamas; tennis shoes did the job for the Mayor.

Children begin to develop literacy skills at birth through everyday interactions with people and reading stories helps children develop those skills.

"Fifty percent of kids when they go to kindergarten are not ready in language and reading so our mission is to get more kids excited about language and literacy," said Courtney Schmidt, Community Initiative Coordinator for the United Way.

Kids also did a valentines day craft and got to take pictures with the Mayor.
