Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The littlest of racers got their chance to compete Friday.

Dozens of kids, ages 14 and under took part in the annual Whipper Snapper Races at Duluth's Bayfront Festival Park.

Area mascots including UMD's Champ kicked off the competition.

Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders were on hand to keep spirits high.

Races are grouped by boys and girls, as well as ages.

Some kids who ran said the Whipper Snapper race was all in fun, others said they were out for the win.

"When they ring the bell, it's a lot of fun because you get that confidence in you," Meg Stephan, an 8-year-old said.

"I kept running until I got to the finish line," I didn't let any kid behind me pass me," Saffryn Behr, a 6-year-old said.

Each participant was awarded a ribbon after they crossed the finish line.
