Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)--A Father's Day barn fire has one Duluth family sifting through the wreckage of what is now a total loss.
Fire crews from Rice Lake, Canosia, and Lakewood Township responded to the call of a barn on fire on Sjodin Road, just after 3 p.m.
According to the family, the detached barn at the center of their property had been struck by lighting. Inside the barn at the time of the lightning strike were the family horses, along with saddles, horse vitamins and 15 bales of hay.
Crews were on the scene within 10 minutes, and quickly worked to battle the blaze which collapsed the back half of the roof.
Crews needed to use a back hoe to tear open the front side of the barn, in order to soak the hay and extinguish all the flames.
19-year-old Amber Reinking was at work when she said she got the call to come home not knowing what waited for her when she arrived.
She says all family members and animals made it out of the barn safely. and that rubber mats on the floor would've prevented any electrical current from electrocuting anyone in the barn during the strike.
