Carlton, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A Cloquet man has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree and assault in the first degree for aiding and abetting in a shooting incident that left one man critically wounded.

John Edwin Bemis III was extradited from Nevada Tuesday where authorities say he fled after Richard Majerle was shot in the chest last January.

Majerle's estranged wife, Marie Majerle, is charged with attempted murder in the case.

The criminal complaint pegs Bemis as the ringleader behind the shooting...stating that he approached Marjele to make plans to shoot her estranged husband so he and she could get back together and leave the state.

The complaint says Bemis purchased the ammunition used in the shooting and showed Majerle how to use the rifle and what to do with the weapon and her clothing after the shooting.

Carlton County Attorney Tom Pertler says these new revelations did not come out until yesterday, but that investigators had a hunch all along since Bemis disappeared when they simply wanted to speak to him.

"I would say that it was information and a theory of the case and a suspicion investigators had all along. So they were on the right track and what they suspected to be the case and it turns out they were dead on," said Pertler.

Bemis is also still facing charges of child abandonment after he allegedly left his fourteen year old daughter behind for the last six months while he was on the run.

Pertler says that it was a random run-in with police in Reno, Nevada that led authorities to Bemis.

He was extradited to Minnesota yesterday for the child abandonment warrant, but the two new charges were added last night after investigators spoke with Marie Majerle.

The judge set bail at 250-thousand dollars, or 180- thousand dollars with conditions, including wearing a GPS monitoring devise and not leaving Cloquet.

Bemis is expected back in court on July 10.
