The body of 82 year old Paul Brandt has been found 10 days after he went missing picking berries on the Gunflint Trail.
The Cook County Sheriff's Dept., Gunflint Trial Fire Dept., the State Border Patrol and Search and rescue were unable to locate Brandt's body.
After officials suspended the search five days in, concerned family and community members formed their own search party.
This was the group that found Brant in a swampy area a quarter of a mile from his car.
It's a sad story but a great example of community members pulling together for a friend.
Brandt disappeared August 1st to his family's dismay.
Officials had eyes in the sky and on the ground as well as numerous search dogs to aid in finding the missing man.
When they were unable to locate Brandt, not only did citizens form their own search party but Sarah Hamilton, owner of Trail Center Lodge, even closed her business during peak season to join the search efforts.
The party found Brandt, 5 days into their search.
Jerome Brandt, Paul Brandt's brother was among the many that scoured the trail in search for his brother.
"I know he's a Christian and he's happy in heaven," says Jerome.
Approximately 50 people showed up for the first day of the community search.
Paul Brandt's brother Carl Brant and his 2 nieces accompanied Jerome Brandt.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
