Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Shoulder widening and rehabilitation improvements of the North Shore Scenic Drive near Brighton Beach could take place in the near future.

If a $2.5 million grant is approved Duluth city officials say the widening and road rehab project would improve the road from Brighton Beach to the easterly city limits near McQuade Road.

If the award is granted, improvements could include guardrail improvements, shoulder stabilization and widening, and new pavement.

Officials say the widening would be done in order to allow for bike-lane accommodations on the shoulders.

"We don't know if we're even going to be able to access the grant or not. We don't know how well this project will ultimately qualify competitively with other grants, but we thought we'd take a shot at it. So we don't know all the details of exactly how that project would happen," said Dave Montgomery, chief administration officer for the city.

If the grant is approved the city would then assess how to move forward with the proposed changes.
