Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Northland leaders are hoping to boost tourism by mapping locally-recommended tourist destinations and they're getting help from National Geographic.
The geotourism initiative is a partnership between National Geographic Maps and The Heart of the Continent Partnership, which is made up of stakeholders in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Canada.
The end result will be an online map with featured destinations that have been nominated by locals.
"[The map gives] people and communities in destinations the opportunity to explain who they are, what they are, what type of people might be attracted to this. I think it's really important to create tourism that benefits both people [tourists and locals]," said Jim Dion of National Geographic's Maps Division.
The map is expected to be online in November. It will also be offered as a free mobile app for iPhone and Android.
