Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Hundreds of American flags wave from flag poles across the Northland, but happens to them when they become old and ragged?

If troops from the Voyageurs Area Council Boys Scouts have their way every flag would have a proper retirement.

Scouts from Troop numbers 7 and 28 hosted a retirement ceremony at Rice Lake Township Park on Friday night.

They retired nine flags using fire.

The ceremony is conducted with dignity and respect and the flags are burned completely to ashes.

“It's not just the scouts that should understand this,” Lance Johnson Committee Chair of Boy Scout Troop 7 said. “All citizens should understand what we are doing. This is for everyone to come and watch the proper way to retire a flag.”

A featured speaker was Brad Bennett a retired Marine, Vietnam veteran and former President of the Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation.
