Palace Bar in Superior Deemed Uninhabitable Following Roof Collapse

Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Superior building inspector is concerned about many of the buildings along Tower Avenue following the roof collapse at the Palace Bar in Superior on Monday.

Late last week business was routine at the Palace with the owner reporting no problems.

But early Monday morning, south sections of the roof in the back of the bar caved in.

Luckily owner, Ken Peters wasn't hurt, but as of now the bar remains closed with signs posted outside saying the building is condemned for human habitation.

Officials say the building has been a fixture here in Downtown Superior since the late 1800's.

Superior's Chief Building Inspector Dan Curran says this collapse not only concerns him for The Palace but for several other buildings in this part of Superior that are close in age.

Curran says there are several factors, beyond the building's age, that may have contributed to Monday's collapse.

"It appears that there had been a fire in that roof framing at one point that was severely charred. A portion of it that may have been an off to weaken those members that when it did sustain a load from the ice, snow and the rain the water and all the rest of it, it just couldn't carry it," said Superior Chief Building Inspector, Dan Curran.

Curran went on to say that a third party insurance consultant is in the process of taking estimates on the damage, and he believes, for the business to reopen, that it will be costly. Adding he is confident that the construction right outside the business had nothing to do with the incident.

He says he believes the investigation will point to the building's age and the elements as major contributing factors in the collapse.

Curran also said he's concerned because several other buildings along Tower Avenue are close in age. The city says they will look into ways of inspecting the older buildings, as of right now there is no requirement for older building inspection within the city.
