Virginia, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Handling debt can be challenging for anyone, but it can be especially difficult for students racking up large amounts of student loans while trying to get through school.
A new partnership at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College is hoping to help.

"I think this is one service that we can offer to students to help them as they progress through their two-year to their four-year degrees," said Dean of Students, David Dailey.

The school is partnering with Lutheran Social Service Financial Counseling to offer non–profit counseling on campus.

"What we'll be doing there is one–on–one financial counseling where we meet with a person, a couple, a family and come up with an overall financial game plan," said LSS Financial Counseling Program Director, Dan Williams.

The counseling will focus on debt issues, such as credit cards and student loans. Issues that are unfortunately familiar to some students.

"Students are maxing out their loan debt and their credit card debt to support themselves while they go to school and we hope that LSS can provide services to those students," said Dailey.

According to LSS Financial Counseling, Minnesota college graduates have the third highest average student loan debt in the country, leaving school with an average debt of more than $29,000 per student.

"We've had lots of requests for increasing our availability on the Iron Range. Our local advisory council in the area had really indicated it was an issue," said Williams.

The counseling is also available to the entire Iron Range community.

The financial counseling will start this Wednesday.
