Silver Bay, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- This year marks a mile stone for Rocky Taconite.

The statue has been welcoming motorists to Silver Bay for 50 years.

You can spot Rocky along highway five with pick ax in hand on top of a boulder of taconite.

He was created in 1964 as a symbol of the town's prosperity.

With a recently applied coat of paint, he is ready for his 50th celebration.

"We are going to ask people if they want to kind of congregate down by rocky and we will sing him a little happy birthday. I mean, you know, I mean its kind of off the wall and kinda hokey, but it's how we are," said Mayor of Silver Bay, Joanne Johnson.

The singing will happen next weekend, July 12 during Silver Bay's "Bay Day Festival."

Bay Day starts Friday July 11 to July 13.
