Canyon, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A 60-year-old man from Janesville, Minnesota drowned Friday after attempting to rescue his grandchildren from Lake Nichols in Canyon, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's department.

Authorities say the children had fallen in the water after the tube they were riding on behind a paddleboat overturned.

The children panicked, despite wearing their life jackets.

Neighbors located the man's body after he was underwater for nearly 30 minutes.

The neighbors started CPR and crews took over when they arrived but they were unable to save the man.

The Saint Louis County Sheriff's department wants to remind people that physically getting in the water for a rescue is a very last resort.

"If you can throw something that floats to them and the final step, the final step you would do then is to go to jump in the water after," said Undersheriff, Dave Phillips.

The children were not hurt.

First responders included crews from Meadowlands, Canyon, Cotton and Saint Louis County.

According the undersheriff the man was not wearing a life jacket.
