Hibbing, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Taxpayers in northern St. Louis County got their first look at the proposed 2014 St. Louis County budget and levy.

The county is proposing a 1.5 percent levy increase which equals $1.6M designed to strictly fund debt services.

Some notable improvements within the county include the $21M infrastructure improvement project to the Government Services Center in Duluth.

County commissioners say the county is in a good place financially and taxpayers will see a nearly unchanged budget of $320M from 2013 to 2014.

"We're kind of looking ahead all the time, looking around the curves. We've settled most of our contracts, and we have a five-year capital improvement plan that's in place that is constantly updated. We are in a very good position financially, our bond rating, our AA+ is about a high as you can go, there's only one more notch up that you can go," said commissioner Steve Rauker, St. Louis County Commissioner.

Another public meeting on the proposed budget and levy will be held in south Saint Louis County on December 5.

The board is expected to vote on the final 2014 budget on December 17th.
