AURORA, MN (Northland's Newscenter)---Do you want to earn some money just by picking up pine cones? The Superior National Forest will pay you for doing just that.
The Forest Service will pay fifty to seventy dollars per bushel for Jack Pine cones now through the first of July.
One bushel is equivalent to two– five gallon buckets.
The collected seeds will support nursing, planting and seeding in the forests of Northeastern MN.
But before you go picking pine cones you have to check in with the Superior National Forest.
Pickers are asked to call the District Office to schedule an appointment, register and learn specifics about the picking process.
"When they bring them in we want them to bring them in a breathable bag like a burlap sac or a plastic mesh bag so we will watch them pour the cones into the bushel and we will kind of sort through them that way," said Forest Silviculturist, Ryan Siebold.
The seed zone areas designated for picking start just north of Duluth in the Arrowhead region.
