Superior, WI( NNCNOW.com) --- A Superior man is facing attempted first degree intentional homicide charges after allegedly assaulting a police sergeant and attempting to grab his gun.

30-year-old Gregory Thompson is charged with domestic abuse disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, attempting to disarm an officer, and attempted first degree intentional homicide following an incident with a Superior Police officer early Tuesday morning.

Officials say Thompson was intoxicated and disorderly when a police officer attempted to arrest him at his mother's home on the 5800 block of Banks Avenue.

After repeated attempts to get Thompson to calm down or leave the house, he was told he was under arrest.

The sergeant was assisting Thompson to his feet when he noticed a large dagger style knife in his hand and immediately took action to knock the knife out of his hand.

During the arrest, Thompson allegedly tried to grab the officer's gun.
The officer had to call in back up and use pepper spray to subdue Thompson.

"We're lucky a case where weapons were involved like this it didn't end with a more tragic outcome either to the officer or to Mr. Thompson," said Deputy Chief Nicholas Alexander.

Thompson allegedly made statements to police that he was trying to kill the officer.

He is currently being held in the Douglas County Jail with bail set at ten thousand dollars.
