Ely, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- Sustainable Ely is hoping to bring attention to, what they say, are environmental concerns from copper nickel mining near the Boundary Waters. Saturday marks the grand opening of their headquarters.

The issue of copper nickel mining has gotten a lot of attention lately with two companies, Twin Metals and Polymet, going through the permitting process to mine metals in the Northland.

Sustainable Ely members say this type of mining will pollute the BWCA with toxic byproducts that are prevalent when precious metals are brought the surface and exposed to oxygen.

But companies interested in copper nickel mining say it can be done safely and the result will be a booming new industry to the area.
