Virginia, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - The position of Mayor of Virginia is now officially vacant.

The City Council officially declared the spot vacant during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

This means the Council now has 30 days to decide how to fill former Mayor Steve Peterson's spot.

Peterson announced he would step down as Mayor of Virginia during a council meeting in September.

Members at Tuesday's meeting said that discussion was needed to determine how to fill the position.

"It's a position that's held of high esteem," said Councilor Larry Cuffe Jr., "Just like it is with the City Council. It does need a lot of discussion. We need to come to some kind of consensus."

Vice Mayor Larry Cuffe Jr. has been the city's acting mayor since October 1st.
