Shell Lake, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) A Wisconsin man, accused of killing his brother, made his initial appearance Monday in Washburn County Court.

James Pinter was arrested after his brother John's body was found in a camping trailer on family property on July 7th.

According to the criminal complaint Pinter confessed the murder to a family member explaining he believed John was attempting to steal his personal property and ID.

Authorities say Pinter had mental health issues after the death of their mother, and ceased taking his medication, and began to act irrationally.

District Attorney Mike Bitney says mental health examinations must be completed before moving further in the case.

"There is an issue of whether or not he's competent to stand trial and assist in his own defense. That order was previously signed by Judge Wright from Sawyer County who had appeared previously when the defendant was first arrested and right now we're in the process of going through the evaluation to see if in fact he's competent enough to stand the charges against him."

Bail has been denied for Pinter who will stay in custody until a psychological health survey is conducted on him.

He remains in the Washburn County Jail.
