Oliver, WI (NNCNOW.com) - At a little bar in Oliver, Wisconsin ... people come together once week to support Northland Veterans, the best way the customers know how.

The owners of El Dorado bar hold a weekly meat raffle to give financial support to veterans and their families.

"It has totally coverd the food costs and the laundry costs for those veterans who are living in our transitional housing for the past year," said Steve Saari, the regional director for the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans.

The West Duluth location has 21 housing units in and of those, nine are transitional housing units for veterans coming off the street.

"It's been phenomenal, it's been great fun, and people kinda look for us each week, they have some great meat, it comes from Superior Meats over there and we have a great time," said Durbin Keeney, a veterans advocate.

There are six raffle drawings each week, and over the course of the past year, meat buyers helped raise 11,000 dollars.

Patrons say it's a fun way to support and thank those who have served our country.

"It's a great thing to be able to take care of these folks who have taken care of us," said Keeney.

"We have been coming here for like, ever. But since they started the VA we come almost every Wednesday that we can to support them, as much as often," said Cheryl Thilman, who won a ham from the raffle.

Support that fills an appetite to help.

If you would like participate in the raffle, it starts at 6 pm every Wednesday night at the El Dorado Bar in Oliver.
