Richard "Rick" D. Olson, 85, of Duluth passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, in Essentia Health Hospice Unit.
Rick was born in Duluth, on Feb. 27, 1926, to Nels and Marion Olson. Rick married Jean McKnight on Jan. 30, 1948, and raised seven children.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a lifetime member of the Proctor Speedway and former President. He worked at Twin Port Signs, Todd Signs and Rick's Signs and was a member of Lake Avenue Loafers.
He enjoyed camping at Big Lake, was an avid golfer and a lifelong No. 44 Nelson Racing team supporter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; infant daughter, Peggy; granddaughter Melissa Olson; sister Marion "Peg" Wennberg; sister-in-law Patricia and Kenneth Kolquist; and his furry companion, "Carter".
Rick is survived by his children, Rich "Swede" (Yvonne) Olson of Hermantown, Patti (Larry) Menz of Esko, Pam (Terry) Gilbert of Hermantown, Ronald (Arlys) Olson of Indianola, Iowa, Randy (Carolyn) Olson of Lakeville, Minn., Penny (Larry) Van Why of Duluth and Robert "Scott" Olson of Rochester, Minn.; 17 grandchildren, Chris (Amanda), Brandon, Brianne, Jodi, Jeremy, Destiny, Christopher, Amy, Jason, Andrea, Justin, Jessica, Erin, Eden, Ryan, Matthew and Mark; seven great-grandchildren, Maeghan, Maisie, Mary, Ashley, Benett, Alex and Jocelyn; six nieces; and two nephews.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Avenue, Duluth.
