Joel comes to the Northland's News Center from Southern Minnesota. He grew up on a farm just outside of New Ulm.

In the fall of 2004, Joel came to Duluth to begin his collegiate career at UMD. At college, Joel spent a significant amount of time fending off pranks and practical jokes from his three roommates.
"They never ceased to amaze me," said Joel. "The three of us lived together through three years of school, and it was a great experience--the pranks were all in good fun."
While he was in college, Joel completed internships at KEYC in Mankato and at the Northland's NewsCenter. He also worked at UMD Statesman.
"What I enjoy most about journalism is talking to other people, and finding out how a story affects their life," said Joel.
