Shannon Murphy started as the meteorologist for NewsCenter Today at the Northland’s NewsCenter upon graduation from the University of North Dakota in May 2007. She obtained her degree in Atmospheric Sciences and is an active member of the American Meteorological Society.
Throughout the morning, you can listen to her forecasts on Kool 101.7, B105, and Mix 108. Every Wednesday during NewsCenter at 6, you can watch her weekly series, "Your Green Life," which gives tips on how to live green.
In college, Shannon had a role on the weather team for the news program Studio One. She also was a member of the women’s soccer team for four years, and will always remain a proud Fighting Sioux Alumni.
Shannon is a Minnesota native, originally from Inver Grove Heights, where her family still resides. Due to the intense Midwest weather, she has always had a passion for meteorology, but knew broadcasting was her calling when a weather anchor had visited her Junior High Earth Science class. Ironically, this class is currently being taught in the same classroom by her older sister! She hopes to have the same opportunity to inspire other young women to get into the field of meteorology.
Shannon’s interests include all outdoor activities, working on her guitar skills, and knitting in her spare time. She also loves watching hockey and soccer, and of course, the Sioux being her favorite team to watch.
You can email Shannon anytime with weather questions or story ideas at smurphy@northlandsnewscenter.com.
