Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm, Minn. is the first musher to cross the finish line for the 30th Annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

Schroeder crossed the finish line just before 1:30pm Wednesday to take the top prize for the race.

Schroeder is no stranger to the Beargrease. He was also the champion in 2010 and 2013, but has come close many other times.

It has been a difficult marathon for mushers and their dogs, especially because of the bitterly cold weather teams had to brave along most of the race.

According to the University of Minnesota-Duluth, there are more than 700 significant elevation changes throughout the race course, with more than 33,000 feet of elevation change. The university says Beargrease teams would have to run up and down the highest point of Duluth’s Spirit Mountain ski hill 50 times to match that amount of elevation change.

We'll have a full report from the finish line of the Beargrease tonight on the news at 6pm on KBJR 6 and Range 11.
