Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The #8-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team started the 2012-13 season in winning fashion on Friday night, beating the Minnesota Whitecaps 5-3 at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
Audrey Cournoyer scored two goals for the Bulldogs in the winning effort, supplemented by the first collegiate goal from both Alivia Del Basso and Hannah Bramm.
Freshman goaltender Kayla Black made 12 saves for UMD in her first-ever collegiate start, allowing no goals over the first 30:13 for the Bulldogs.
Freshman Sofia Carlstrom played the reaminder of the game in net, allowing three goals and making 11 saves for UMD.
The Bulldogs and Whitecaps will conclude the two-game exhibition series on Saturday afternoon, with faceoff set for 3:07 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
