Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Longtime sports director Tom Hansen on Monday night officially announced his retirement from the television industry, ending nearly 28 years covering news, weather, and sports on television, radio, and the Internet.

Hansen cited family concerns as his primary reason for leaving, having helped his wife, Kris, battle cancer for more than four years and having recently lost his father to cancer.

He also has two daughters, Kelsey and Nikki, with whom he says he would like to spend more time as they reach adulthood.

He made the official announcement during Monday's KBJR6 and Range 11 News at Ten, a show that has regularly seen him deliver the day's sports news since first coming to the station in 1989.

Hansen will move to work at his alma mater, UW-Superior, where he will start on March 25 as the Associate University Relations Specialist.
