Ashland, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Northland College senior infielder Sam Bona became on Wednesday afternoon the program's all-time leader in hits, passing the mark of 2012 graduate Kylie Garing.

Bona hit an RBI single in the fourth inning against North Central, with that marking her 179th career hit with the Lumberjills and passing Garing's mark of 178.

"I followed in the footsteps of a lot of other great players," Bona said of her record-breaking moment. "Through great coaching and the support of my teammates, I get hits. That's all I really focus on is trying to get on base so we can score."

Bona and the Lumberjills have seven more regular season games remaining before the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament, leaving her plenty of opportunity to expand her record.

"She is a great hitter who has worked at her game," Northland head coach Steve Wammer said. "Whenever she steps into the box you can expect a hit. She is never intimidated."
