Chisholm, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Chisholm boys' basketball coach Bob McDonald has spent the past 59 seasons coaching high school players in the Northland, time that has now brought him to the cusp of a milestone to which no other coach has come close --- 1,000 wins.

McDonald, who is already the state's all-time coaching wins leader, currently sits at 999 victories and could reach the career milestone as soon as Dec. 26 when his team plays against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

The win, whenever it comes, will further cement McDonald as one of, if not the best high school head coach in Minnesota history. That is an honor, though, that the 80-year McDonald says is shared by many people other than himself.

"It's nice to have happen, but I can't take it upon myself to be grandiose and say that I did it," McDonald said. "I coached 1,000 wins, but I didn't play 1,000 wins. My players did that, and I've had some dandies through the years."

McDonald has spent the past 53 seasons at Chisholm, leading the Bluestreaks in that time to 11 section championships and three state titles. The six seasons before that for McDonald were spent split between McGregor and Barnum.

This year's Bluestreaks will next be in action at 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 26 against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, with that game marking the first chance for McDonald to reach the career milestone.
