Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- With over 100 teams on hand for Saturday's Lake Superior Dragonboat Festival, it's no surprise that the name Wikiwiki Wahine stood out, a group of 22 women from around the Northland competing.
Duluthian Julie Deters and her husband, Ron, started the team in 2006. The team's name means "speedy women" in Hawaiian. Deters, along with two of her teammates, recently participated in the International Dragon Boat Festival in Hungary.
Deters brought home with eight different medals from the world championships and said the energy on race day is unlike anything else.
"There's just this fabulous, intense energy in the dragonboat. You have 22 people working together perfectly, ideally. That kind of intensity, even though it's really short, is massive."
The Wikiwiki Wahine finished seventh out of 94 qualifying rounds finishers.
