(NNCNOW.com) --- Former Minnesota Timberwolves center Jason Collins has announced he's gay, making him the first active player in major American team sports to make such an announcement.

Collins' announcement comes in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, which will hit the shelves on May 1.

There have been many statements of support for Collins since his announcement became public, including that of NBA commissioner David Stern/

"Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career," Stern said, "and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue."

Collins played the 2012-13 season with Boston and Washington, marking his 12th year of competition in the NBA. He played the 2008-09 season with Minnesota, appearing in 31 games for the Timberwolves that year.

News of Collins' announcement reached as far as the White House on Monday, with press secretary Jay Carney offering a statement of support.

"We view that as another example of the progress that has been made and the evolution that has been taking place in this country," Carney said. "We commend him for his courage and support him in this effort."
