Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Duluth, Minn. native Mark Korte has been going to the racetrack since before he can remember, but his passion for driving one of those amazing machines came a little more recently.
"I've been going to the races since I was small," Korte said. "Finally I had the opportunity to buy a car, and I bought a car. The rest, as they say, is history."
Now Korte has turned into one of the most well-respected and well-liked drivers at AMSOIL Speedway.
"He's very friendly. He never seems to be upset, which is a good attribute for a racecar driver," pit crew member Dick Fabini said, "and he works hard at it -- very hard."
"It's a juggling act," Korte said of managing a race team. "You work when you can and some nights you don't get a lot of sleep."
Sleep or no sleep, put Korte behind the wheel, and adrenaline will do the rest.
"It's a rush," he said of race nights. "You look at your surroundings, realize what you're doing, and you just go for it."
And to make everything better, he gets to share in his racing dream with whom it all started.
"Dad comes to all the races," Korte said. "He sits in the stands with Mom and their friends. When I go out of town, he comes with me. He's my right-hand man, so to speak."
There is one thing, though, that will never go away when Korte steps on the gas.
"I'm nervous every time I get in the car," he said. "It's a good nervous, and I'll keep doing it until that goes away."
