Newark, NJ (NNCNOW.com) --- Grand Rapids senior Avery Peterson was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the sixth round of the NHL Entry Draft on Sunday night with the 167th overall pick
The 6-foot-2 center racked up 23 goals and 31 assists for the Thunderhawks last season before finishing up with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL.
Peterson said afterward that it was exciting to be drafted by his home state's team.
"I wasn't dozing off, but I was sitting and just looking at the draft and seeing when I could go possibly," Peterson said. "When the Wild came up and my name got called, I was pretty excited about that. Obviously being a Minnesota kid, it's a good moment."
Peterson was the lone American player drafted by the Wild.
