Hawks Fall in 5th Straight State Championship

March 8, 2014 Updated Mar 9, 2014 at 4:26 PM CST

St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Hermantown boys' hockey team had a one-goal lead after the first until East Grand Forks answered with five goals in the second period before winning 7-3 in the MSHSL Class A State Championship on Saturday.

Scott Wasbotten scored the game's first goal with less than a minute to play in the first period. In the second, the Green Wave scored twice in just 1:07 to take a 2-1 lead. They'd add two more goals before the period ended and led 4-1 headed into the final frame.

In the third, Hermantown's Jace Thomas took over in net for Adam Smith, and Parker Hawks scored his first goal of the tournament to cut the deficit to 5-2. That's as close as the Hawks would get as the Green Wave clinched their first ever state championship.

Hermantown has now lost five straight state championships.
