Hayward, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- More than 100 competitors gathered in Hayward, Wisc. on Thursday for the opening night of the 54th Annual Lumberjack World Championships, which will run through Saturday.

With 21 different events, the competitors are battling for $50,000 in prize money.

For boom runner and log roller Shana Martin who's been competing for 27 years, the world championships are unlike anything else.

"Well, this is the World Championships," said Shana Martin, a Madison, Wisc. native. "This is like Lumberjack paradise, the Lumberjack Olympics. There's this feeling that you can't compare when you come into the Lumberjack bowl, like the second you walk in and see it.

It's this nervous excitement, just wow, here we go, we're at the world championships. There's nothing that compares to this."
