Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers may not have a large team, but head coach Dave Homstad is confident they will have a committed team.

Homstad and the Hilltoppers opened practice Monday for the 2011 season, hoping to improve on the one win they earned in 2010.

Duluth Marshall will open the season Friday, August 26 against the Two Harbors Agates, a team the Hilltoppers lost to 28-7 last year.

Homstad, who is coming off recent knee replacement surgery, said he is encouraged by what he's seen so far from the team.

"This is a great group of kids," Homstad said of the 2011 Hilltoppers. "We've had a great display of team leadership, and everybody has been on time to practice, and everybody has been working as hard as they can. We don't have a lot of numbers, but the ones we've got are ones we'd like to keep."

The team is focused these first two weeks on learning the playbook, and will be leaning heavily on their experience on the offensive line.

"We're just putting in the base plays right now," Homstad said. "We're lucky that we have an entire offensive line that's returning. They put a lot of time in during the summer. We had a strength, speed, and agility camp for eight weeks, and these guys are showing to be pretty impressive."
