Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Duluth East has hired Joaquim Harris to fill its vacant girl's basketball head coaching position, the school announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Harris comes to the Greyhounds after spending the past five years within the Duluth Marshall program, one year as head coach and four as an assistant.

The St. Scholastica graduate takes over for Bill Kunze, who spent six seasons as head coach of the Greyhounds. The team went (22-6) in the 2011-12 season and qualified for the program's first state tournament since 2003.

Harris said he was excited for the opportunity to compete for section titles with Duluth East, and he expects his teams to play a strong defensive style.

He came to the Northland after spending some time playing professionally in Europe and a couple in the NBA Developmental League, calling that experience a "one-in-a-million chance."

Besides his time at Duluth Marshall, Harris also has experience coaching community college basketball in both Arizona and California.
