Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Duluth East girls' tennis team went to 11 straight MSHSL tournaments from 1985-95, but that 1995 appearance was the team's last --- until Monday morning.
The Greyhounds beat Elk River 4-3 to win the Section 7AA championship and earn the program's first trip to the state tournament in 17 years.
"We have a young team, and they've been playing very well," head coach Lee Kruger said. "We were peaking at the right time, and today it was just a matter of some of the youngsters pulling it through. They stayed positive, and they did the little things."
Duluth East swept the three doubles matches in the championship round, and Gates LeSavage won her #4 singles match to provide the Greyhounds with the 4-3 winning margin.
Seeding for the MSHSL Class AA tournament will be done sometime this week, with the Greyhounds' semifinal match to be played on Oct. 22 on the University of Minnesota campus.
