Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Tom Hansen, in his own words, says goodbye to the Northland after announcing on Monday night his retirement from the television industry after nearly 28 years to spend more time with his wife, his daughter, and his family.

"For more than 27 years I have been blessed to cover your games, teams, players and coaches on radio, TV, online in news, weather and sporting events.

I love the job; always have, always will.

But I love my family more.

They have sacrificed so much over the years. I have missed birthdays, anniversaries, sporting events, team banquets, parent/teacher conferences and much more due to the hours we keep here in TV.

I want to be a better husband and father.

In an effort to do that, I need to change the hours I work so I can spend more time with them.

I am announcing my resignation as Sports Director and will move into retirement from my media work. I hope to still do play-by-play for college games and or high school games for the Northland's NewsCenter.

I have accepted the position of Associate University Relations Specialist with UW-Superior.

My family and I want to thank you for your support, encouragement and prayers over the years. Many of you know of my wife's battle with cancer, in which she is now approaching two years cancer free.

I recently lost my father to cancer, who was my hero.

Those events have given me time to reflect on what is truly important in life, and that's family. I want to be a better family man.

I wish you all the best today and always, and thank you for the 27 plus years I have had in media work here in the Twin Ports.

I will never forget you."
