Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Over 100 racers competed in the inaugural Superior Watercross Shootout over the weekend with the final heats wrapping up on Sunday afternoon at Barker's island in Superior.

The event sanctioned by the International Watercross Association (IWA) drew over 1,200 spectators as snowmobiles sped across the water.

While it was the first year of the event, organizers say they plan to make it an annual competition. For Superior's Mike Simmons, it allows for him to get on his sled during the summer months.

"The winter's haven't been what they used to be," Simmons said. "I wanted to use the equipment year-round so I showed up to Moose Lake last year and caught the bug from there. I'm in love with it now."
