Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Bruce LaRoque has resigned his position as head boys' hockey coach at Grand Rapids High School, he confirmed to NNCNOW.com via telephone on Monday afternoon.

"It wears on you, but it's also fun," LaRoque said of coaching. "It's just for general health and the family. It's time to take a break and have some time for them and less stress from coaching."

LaRoque spent 14 seasons as head coach of that Thunderhawks program, taking the team to the MSHSL Class AA state tournament in both 2006 and 2007.

He also said Monday afternoon he met with as many players as he could before making the news public.

Independent School District #318 superintendent Joe Silko said he was not informed prior to Monday of LaRoque's decision, but he added that the process of filling the position will begin shortly.

The job will soon be publicly posted, but Silko said it depends on the group of applicants as to whether the hire will be an interim or permanent replacement.
