Milwaukee, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Milwaukee Brewers catcher Martin Maldonado and outfielder Carlos Gomez were handed suspensions on Tuesday for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl during a game this past Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the league announced.

Maldonado was suspended five games for his role and will begin serving that sentence immediately, but Gomez, who was suspended three games, will appeal and is able to play until that process is complete.

Pittsburgh outfielder was suspended two games and catcher Russell Martin received a one-game suspension for their roles in the fight, but both will file appeals with the league.

The fight began when Gomez got into an altercation with Pittsburgh pitcher Gerrit Cole after hitting a triple and ended with both benches and bullpens clearing and a fight breaking out on the left side of the infield.
