Northlanders Highlight National Signing Day

(NNCNOW.com) --- Plenty of Northland athletes were making official plans for their future on Thursday, signing letters of intent with colleges of their choice as part of national signing day.

Duluth East's Elena Lushine, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton's Carley Esse, and Hermantown's Katie Thun all signed Division I letters of intent on Thursday, choosing to continue their athletic careers in the Midwest.

Lushine is off to Northern Iowa to play volleyball, that after suffering a season-ending knee injury with the Greyhounds at the start of the 2012 year.

Esse, meanwhile, signed a letter of intent to play hockey for Bemidji State, which is a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) with the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Thun signed her letter of intent on Thursday to play softball with North Dakota State University (NDSU), that after helping Hermantown to four straight MSHSL Class AA tournament and the 2009 state championship.

Grand Rapids senior Kenzie Kane highlighted some of the Division II commitments on Thursday, signing her letter of intent to play basketball for UMD.

Fellow Thunderhawks senior Dani DelGreco also inked a Division II letter of intent on Thursday, signing to play golf at the University of North Dakota.

Completing a trio of signings in the Grand Rapids athletic family, Reid Holum officially committed Thursday to play Division II baseball for St. Cloud State.

Rounding out the Division II signings on Thursday was South Shore's Emily Gustafson, who signed to play basketball at Upper Iowa.
